Advocacy

Every day in sub-Saharan Africa, thousands of people die of HIV/AIDS or other life-threatening diseases. In all too many cases, the final months of their lives are lived in fear, loneliness, and considerable pain.  In addition, millions of children have to care for their dying parents and then have to act as heads of households and provide care for their siblings.

Advocate for Increased Support of Palliative Care in Africa

  • Advance health policy positions in sub-Saharan African that increase the access to and quality of palliative care.
  • Develop and implement a communication and fund development strategy to engage others in support of palliative care and home-based programs in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Organize humanitarian missions to sub-Saharan Africa for US health ambassadors.
  • Conduct and promote public education in the United States regarding the needs and the challenges of hospice care in Africa.

Advocacy is central to a sustained effort against HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases in Africa and in other parts of the world.  While there are considerable efforts being marshaled towards prevention and treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS, there is scant attention being directed towards palliative care for the thousands of people who will die daily of  serious diseases. FHSSA works together with the Princess Diana of Wales Memorial Fund to focus our efforts on opioid availability, national and regional palliative care organizational development, and palliative care delivery.
